A Star Set in a Mountain (1991)
"Mill Mountain Star" was dedicated on thanksgiving eve, November 23, 1949, as a Christmas display for the City of Roanoke. It was dedicated by the Sixth District Congressman at the time, Clifton A. Woodrum ll. The world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star sits atop Mill Mountain and is visible for sixty miles. The star has been gazed upon by people all over the world. After the construction of the star, Roanoke has been known as the "Star City of the South." And, since its dedication has become the symbol of Roanoke's Pride and Prosperity.
